Justin Oei - Organist/Choirmaster

I’m originally from New Jersey and am excited to be joining the St. James’ community in August, having just graduated from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. While there I studied organ with Thomas Marshall, and served as the organist at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Norge, Virginia as well as the organist and choir director for the Episcopal campus ministry at W&M.

In addition to serving as organist/choirmaster here at St. James’, I am a master’s student studying organ performance at SU’s Setnor School of Music, where I study with Dr. Anne Laver. I began playing the organ about five years ago, though I’ve been playing the piano and studying voice for far longer. In 2023 I received the Colleague certificate of the American Guild of Organists.

As organist and choirmaster, I have the privilege of leading music at the 9:00 service every Sunday (and occasionally at 7:45 as well), including directing our wonderful choir. I am also responsible for the maintenance of our wonderful Skinner organ and providing music for weddings and funerals throughout the year.

My “Program Notes” blog is up and running – I will be using it to contextualize the music we sing/play each week. You can either subscribe to reminders or click “no thanks” to view the blog.
